Poverty and precarity
Poverty and precarity caused by growing social and economic
inequality are global issues that inevitably become the subject of discussion
in a number of school subjects such as social studies, history, politics, etc. The EFL classroom offers a place where these
different areas often intersect and where pupils are able to acquire critical
thinking skills, inter- and transcultural competencies as well as a variety of
language competencies by looking at different cultural products (literature,
art, sport etc.) from various English speaking countries.
The teachers’ workshop offers an
opportunity to hear about different representation of poverty and precarity
across the globe (e.g. Canada, South Africa, Zimbabwe and India) and to
discuss various possibilities for teaching these pressing issues effectively in
the EFL classroom.
